It's a rare but very serious fungal infection caused by common mold (found in soil, rotting plants, or compost).
The mold spreads quickly in the body, often attacking blood vessels and causing tissue damage.
It's not contagious—you can’t get it from another person.
You're more likely to get it if your immune system is weakened, like if you have:
Uncontrolled diabetes (especially if you’ve had diabetic ketoacidosis, or DKA).
Cancer (and are getting chemotherapy).
Had an organ transplant (and take drugs to suppress your immune system).
Taken high-dose steroids for a long time (e.g., for asthma, severe COVID-19).
Had a bad injury or burn (mold can enter through damaged skin).
Infection Site | Key Symptoms |
Sinuses/Brain | Facial pain, stuffy nose, black discharge from the nose, swollen eyes, blurry vision. |
Lungs | Cough(sometimes with blood), chest pain, shortness of breath, and fever. |
Skin | Red, swollen area on the skin that turns black(dead tissue), pain, oozing. |
Stomach/Intestines | Bad belly pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, bleeding(rare). |
Diagnosis: Doctors use quick tests (to find mold DNA), scans (CT/MRI to see spread), or small tissue samples (to check for mold under a microscope).
Treatment: It needs urgent care, usually:
Strong antifungal medicine (given through an IV).
Surgery to remove infected or dead tissue (to stop the mold from spreading).
