What are endotoxins?
Endotoxins are lipopolysaccharides (LPS) found in the cell walls of Gram-negative bacteria. They are extremely heat-resistant (typically requiring heating at 160°C for 2-4 hours to completely inactivate). When endotoxins enter the human bloodstream through injection or other methods, they can cause severe "pyrogenic reactions" such as fever and shock.
Why is endotoxin testing crucial?
In biopharmaceutical production, rigorous endotoxin control and testing are required at every stage, from raw materials and culture media to final products (such as injectables, vaccines, and cell therapy products), to ensure patient safety.
Dialysis patients (such as those with renal failure) rely on hemodialysis/peritoneal dialysis for long-term survival. If the dialysate is contaminated with endotoxins, they can enter the patient's body through the dialysis membrane, causing fever, chills, and even septic shock.
Medical endotoxin detection kits ensure patient safety through three core functions:
